Far and away my favorite introductory Hawaiian text. Grammar and idioms are introduced gradually through sets of pattern sentences and simple exercises. Vocabulary used throughout the book is intentionally limited to about 800 words, sentences and dialogues are selected to emphasis proper Hawaiian in practical situations while introducing Hawaiian cultural concepts and world view. The Voices of Eden: A History of Hawaiian Language Studies by Albert J. Schutz.

Covers the history of Hawaiian language and the evolution of its social status over the last 200 years. I particularly enjoyed the chapter covering word lists and dictionaries which contains one of the few neutral analyses of the strengths and weaknesses of Pukui and Elbert's Hawaiian Dictionary.]]> Pukui and Elbert's Hawaiian Dictionary.
